Continuing Adventures with the Nikon F
I thought, after nearly 13 years of buying and shooting all sorts of old film cameras, I had finally come to a place where I could no longer be tempted by “gear acquisition syndrome” or G.A.S. But I have learned that I am weak. Shortly after buying one nice chrome Nikon F, I bought a black body F.
In the past, while hunting down a new-to-me film camera, I’ve alway looked for the most pristine copy I could afford. This time however, a well-loved camera with some nice brass showing caught my eye. Obviously, this F has traveled some miles. I wonder what stories it could tell?
These meter-less Fs have allowed me to experiment with Sunny 16, using Kodak’s old film data sheets to estimate exposure and then bracketing a bit for insurance. I shot these on Kodak Tri-X. I did not nail exposure on all of these, but I had a lot of fun.
Unexpectedly, I find that I really enjoy shooting the Nikon F. With the standard prism finder and a 50mm Nikkor out front, the camera has a nice feel. And the big viewfinder, without any sort of needles or lights or other data is quite liberating.
